Yakushi-ji Temple

Yakushi-ji Temple

📍 Nara

Founded in 680 as the head temple of the Hosso school of Buddhism, it's one of the cultural properties comprising the World Heritage "Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara." The East Pagoda is the only structure surviving from the original founding — it appears to have six stories at a glance but is actually three stories with decorative eave layers added, earning it the nickname "frozen music." The West Pagoda, rebuilt in 1981, stands symmetrically beside its ancient counterpart. The temple sits amid the quiet farmland scenery of the Nishinokyo area.

📸 Best photo spotVisit early morning or late afternoon when it's less crowded, for a clearer shot of the gate and grounds.
