Kasuga Taisha Shrine

Kasuga Taisha Shrine

📍 Nara

Founded in 768, this shrine is famous for the roughly 2,000 moss-covered stone lanterns lining its endless approach path, plus another thousand-odd bronze lanterns placed throughout the grounds — some 3,000 lanterns in total. Every February and August evening, the "Mantoro" festival lights every single lantern, creating a mystical walk beneath soft glowing light. The primeval forest behind the shrine, Kasugayama Primeval Forest, is registered as a World Heritage Site in its own right.
