Mount Wakakusa

Mount Wakakusa

📍 Nara

A gently sloping, entirely grass-covered mountain at 342m elevation, appearing to rise in three overlapping tiers — open to climbers (usually March through December) for a small entry fee. The easy 30-40 minute climb to the summit rewards visitors with a sweeping view over Nara city and the rooftop of Todai-ji. Every fourth Saturday of January, the entire mountainside is set ablaze in the "Yamayaki" (mountain burning) festival, turning the night sky red.
