Founded in 759 by the Tang Chinese monk Ganjin, who lost his eyesight after five failed attempts before finally reaching Japan to transmit Buddhist precepts. The Main Hall (Kondo), preserved in its original Nara-period form, presents a solemn, grand facade lined with eight pillars, giving the whole temple a quiet, understated atmosphere rather than ornate flair. Ganjin's seated statue (a National Treasure, unveiled only a few days each June) and the moss-covered temple garden are famous. It's within walking distance of Yakushi-ji, making the two easy to visit together.
