Isuien Garden

Isuien Garden

📍 Nara

A strolling pond garden made up of two sections — a front garden and a rear garden — built in different eras spanning the Edo and Meiji periods. The rear garden in particular excels at "borrowed scenery" (shakkei), using no walls so the view beyond seamlessly draws in Todai-ji's Great South Gate and Mount Wakakusa, making it feel as though Todai-ji itself is part of the garden while seated inside it. The garden's Neiraku Art Museum also displays Chinese and Korean ceramics.

📸 Best photo spotThe spot where Todai-ji's south gate and Mt. Wakakusa line up as backdrop is the garden's signature view.
