Horyu-ji Temple

Said to have been founded in 607 by Prince Shotoku, this temple holds the world's oldest surviving wooden structures. It became Japan's first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. The layout of its five-story pagoda standing beside the Main Hall preserves Asuka-period architectural style intact — a precious example that overwhelms visitors with its austere beauty even if they have no particular interest in wooden architecture. Located in Ikaruga Town, somewhat removed from central Nara, it makes for a good half-day excursion.
