Missionary Switzer's House

Missionary Switzer's House

📍 Daegu

Missionary Switzer's House was the actual home of American missionaries — including Switzer, Henderson, and Archibald Campbell — who came to Daegu to carry out missionary work starting in 1893.

Built around 1906-1910, it's a Western-style building with two above-ground floors and one basement level, standing southwest-facing atop Dongsan hill, now known as Cheongna Hill. Its foundation was built from andesite stones taken from Daegu's town wall when it was demolished in 1907, topped with a two-story red-brick structure — a striking Korean-Western hybrid where old Korean fortress stone and Western brick meet within a single building. It was designated a Daegu Tangible Cultural Property in 1989.

From 1981, Dongsan Hospital took over the building and used it as staff housing, replacing the traditional Korean roof tiles with galvanized sheeting and making other minor modifications along the way.

Nearby on Cheongna Hill stand more missionary houses built around the same period, including Chamness House and Blair House — together they're a favorite stop on Daegu's Modern Alley Tour, part of a route that continues along the March 1st Independence Movement road to Daegu Jeil Church and Gyesan Cathedral.

ℹ️ Travel infoExterior and partial interior viewing available (subject to change — check before visiting). Located along Cheongna Hill's Modern Alley course.
📸 Best photo spotA close shot of the base, where andesite stone foundation meets red brick, shows off the Korean-Western hybrid style well. It's an easy walk to combine with the other nearby missionary houses (Chamness, Blair) on Cheongna Hill.
