Daegu Jeil Church

Daegu Jeil Church

📍 Daegu

Daegu Jeil Church, founded in 1893, was the first church established in both Gyeongsangbuk-do and Daegu.

It stands in the middle of the Yangnyeongsi herbal medicine market district, alongside the Yangnyeongsi Oriental Medicine Museum and the Daegu Gyonam YMCA building, and faces Gyesan Cathedral — Daegu's first Catholic cathedral — across Seoseong-ro. In earlier times it was known as "Seongnae Church" for standing within the old town wall, or "Nammunan Church" for its location just inside the south gate.

The building follows a classic Gothic style, giving it an exotic, Western European feel. While the main structure is two stories, its bell tower rises the equivalent of five stories, reaching 33 meters — a landmark visible even amid the downtown skyline.

Given its location, it's often included on major sightseeing routes during the Yangnyeongsi Oriental Medicine Culture Festival and Daegu's other major festivals. It's a natural stop along the Modern Alley Tour, and comparing it with Gyesan Cathedral offers a nice look at the flow of modern religious architecture in Daegu.
