February 28 Memorial Central Park

February 28 Memorial Central Park was built in June 2003 to commemorate the February 28 Student Democracy Movement, which took place in Daegu in 1960. It covers an area of 14,354 square meters.

The student democracy movement of February 28, 1960 began in Daegu as a protest against the corrupt Rhee Syngman government of the Liberal Party. It went on to lead to the March 15 Masan Uprising and the April 19 Revolution, ultimately serving as the trigger that brought down the Rhee government.

The park site was formerly home to Daegu Jungang Elementary School, and it carries traces of the February 28 uprising within it. The park features a central fountain flowing from a semicircular sculpture, along with three illuminated fountains.

It's not a place with flashy attractions, but a spot to quietly reflect on the fact that Daegu once opened an important chapter in Korea's democratization history. Close to Dongseongno Street and Gyeongsang Gamyeong Park, it's an easy addition to a downtown walking route.
