Daegu Jingolmok

Jingolmok is an alley formed in the Jongno area of downtown Daegu, offering a glimpse of old history and culture right in the city center.

The name "Jingolmok" comes from "jilda," the Gyeongsang dialect word for "long." Passing through the intersection where the south gate of Daegu Eupseong once stood and heading about 50 meters into Jongno, you'll find this alley stretching off to the right.

From the Gyeongsang Gamyeong era until liberation, this alley was a clan village of the Dalseong Seo family, a native Daegu clan. It also served as a shortcut to reach the provincial government offices without passing through Jongno, the era's main military and administrative road. From the late 19th century, Chinese immigrants began settling in the area, adding further layers to the alley's character.

Old-style Korean restaurants and traditional shops that have carried on for generations still line the alley today — an unadorned place that preserves the texture of Daegu's modern history. It pairs well with Bongsan Culture Street and Gyeongsang Gamyeong Park as part of a downtown walking route.
