Mt. Wolyeosan

Mt. Wolyeosan

📍 Geochang

Mt. Wolyeosan is made up of three peaks. It was once called "Wolyeongsan," meaning a place for moon-viewing, and in years without enough rain, villagers are said to have gathered here under the bright moon to hold rain-prayer rituals and pray for a good harvest.

The legend behind the mountain's name is a compelling one. It's said to be named after "Woryeo," the only daughter of the giantess Bangnang, who once lived here — she wept over a love that could never be, and it's said her tears became the rain that fell. The custom of holding rain-prayer rituals here appears to trace back to this very legend.

Moon-viewing, rain rituals, and a legend of impossible love — this mountain carries several layers of story within a single name.
