Geochang Incident Memorial Park

Geochang Incident Memorial Park

📍 Geochang

Geochang Incident Memorial Park was built to remember one of the most tragic events in modern Korean history. Between February 9 and 11, 1951, during the Korean War, several hundred civilians were killed by a South Korean military unit around Sinwon-myeon in Geochang County.

In 1996, a special law on restoring the honor of those affected by the "Geochang Incident" was enacted, launching a national-level effort at memorialization and restitution — and this park is the result. It includes a memorial hall enshrining the victims' spirit tablets, a history education center presenting records and materials about what happened, and a screening room (also used for seminars) showing related footage.

The grounds also include a red clay barefoot walking path, a quiet place to walk and reflect after taking in the heavier history.

This isn't a leisure destination so much as a place to remember and learn from a painful chapter of modern Korean history. Note that the history center and screening room keep seasonal hours — 9:30am–5pm in summer, 9:30am–4:30pm in winter. The park itself is open anytime, year-round, free of charge.

ℹ️ Travel infoPark open anytime, free, no closed days. Memorial hall, history center, and screening room: summer 9:30am–5pm, winter 9:30am–4:30pm. Barefoot clay path 9am–6pm. Inquiries: 055-940-8510.
📸 Best photo spotThe open plaza in front of the memorial hall offers a full view of the park's layout. Since this is a memorial site, focusing on the architecture and landscape rather than cheerful posed photos is the more fitting approach.
