Tsugawajinja Shrine

One of Izumi Province's Five Great Shrines, Tsugawa Shrine was founded during Emperor Sujin's reign. It's a prestigious shrine said to have received a 600-koku land grant after praying for rain during a severe drought, originally worshipped by locals as the water deity of the upper Ushitaki River. Its main hall, rebuilt by Toyotomi Hideyori, is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property with a three-bay流造 style, front chidori gable, and cypress-bark roof. Its eight wooden male and female deity statues (Kamakura period) serving as sacred objects, and a wooden plaque said to bear the handwriting of Retired Emperor Shirakawa that once hung on the pilgrimage torii facing the Kumano road, are also prefecturally designated cultural properties. A portable shrine said to have been donated by Lady Yodo is enshrined here as well.
