Its exact founding is unclear, but by the late Sengoku era it was the stronghold of the Matsura clan. In 1585 Hideyoshi's nephew Koide Hidemasa became lord and rebuilt it into a five-story keep; the Okabe clan then ruled for 13 generations until the Meiji era. Lightning destroyed the keep in 1827, and today's three-story reconstruction dates to 1954. In front stands the striking 'Garden of Eight Battle Formations,' designed by celebrated landscape artist Shigemori Mirei.
