Shinganji Temple

Founded in the late Azuchi-Momoyama period under Toyotomi Hideyoshi, this temple was demolished after the Winter Siege of Osaka, then rebuilt in 1622 with help from the Umino clan — ancestors of the Sanada family — on the site of the Sanada-maru fortification, to pray for the souls of Sanada Yukimura and his son Daisuke. This area was where the famed general Sanada Yukimura built the Sanada-maru fort and made his stand during the Winter Siege, defending the vulnerable southeastern flank of Uemachi Plateau on the Toyotomi side. Members of the Kyoto Mimawarigumi implicated in the 1867 assassination of Sakamoto Ryoma and Nakaoka Shintaro at the Omiya inn in Kyoto's Kawaramachi later died in the Battle of Toba-Fushimi and are buried here, their graves still preserved today.
