Georyeolsanseong Fortress County Park

A mountain fortress where Baekje loyalists held out against Silla for three years — this is Georyeolsanseong Fortress County Park.

Built by loyal subjects and volunteer soldiers hoping to restore their fallen kingdom after Baekje's defeat, the fortress held out for three years until it fell to Silla generals Kim Heum-sun and Cheonjon in 663 CE. Records say some 700 revival-army soldiers were beheaded when it fell — a place carrying real historical weight.

Today, a 2.1km, 7m-wide stretch of the wall survives in parts of its original form, along with traces of seven watchtower sites and two wells, making it something of an outdoor history classroom.

Just 3km west of downtown Geochang, it's easy to reach, and walking the ridge rewards you with sweeping views over Geochang town and the surrounding mountains.

Honestly, though, circling the whole fortress is more of a hike requiring some stamina, and beyond the signage there's no docent on site, so without some background it can look like just an old stone wall.

A sculpture park sits along the adjacent bike path, letting you pair the history walk with art viewing; it's open at all times and free.
