Geochang Geongyejeong Pavilion

Geochang Geongyejeong was built in 1905 by the Geochang Jang clan.

The clan's founding ancestor, Jang Jong-haeng, was a naturalized Korean who came from China during the reign of King Chungnyeol of Goryeo. His son, Jang Du-min, achieved military distinction during King Gongmin's reign, when Red Turban rebels invaded and occupied Gaegyeong, the capital, plunging the kingdom into crisis — Du-min led troops to drive the rebels out of the city. In recognition of this achievement, King Gongmin granted him the title Lord of Arim.

Geongyejeong was built by his descendants to honor Du-min's achievements. The valley where the pavilion sits is also considered historically and geographically significant.

The fact that a clan has kept the memory of an ancestor's military heroism alive for nearly 600 years is what makes this modest pavilion genuinely special.
