Geochang Galcheon Seodang

Geochang Galcheon Seodang

📍 Geochang

Galcheon Seodang was built in 1573 by Im Hun, who served as magistrate of Gwangju under King Myeongjong of Joseon, together with his brother Im Un, after Im Hun left office to educate the next generation in his hometown. Descendants rebuilt it in 1878, giving it its present form.

Im Hun passed the lower civil service exam and served as magistrate of Gwangju, and was later appointed to a judicial post which he declined, choosing instead to return home and devote himself to teaching. He was honored with a commendation for filial piety. The building is a modest complex of a five-bay lecture hall and a gate.

Rather than an elaborate historic site, this is a place that quietly preserves the choice one scholar made — stepping away from office to teach students in his hometown.

📸 Best photo spotAn angle from inside the courtyard showing both the lecture hall and gate captures the academy's modest layout well.
