Geochang Dangdong Dangjip Shrine

Geochang Dangdong Dangjip Shrine

📍 Geochang

A dangjip, or dangsan, is an object of folk belief believed to house a guardian spirit. The exact construction date of the Dangdong Dangjip in Geochang is unknown, but it underwent partial repairs in the 9th year of King Cheoljong's reign and the 15th year of King Gojong's reign, followed by a major restoration in 1991 that gave it its current form.

It has a single-bay gabled roof on both front and side, and is distinctive for being built entirely from earth and stone without any pillars. The upper frame uses a three-purlin structure, the roof is finished in tile, and the upper wall is wrapped with straw rope.

It isn't an elaborate structure, but it offers a genuine glimpse into the modest folk shrine where villagers have honored a guardian spirit for generations.

📸 Best photo spotSince it's built entirely of earth and stone without pillars, a close-up shot showing the wall's texture works well too.
