Geochang Changchungsa Shrine

Geochang Changchungsa, also known as Ochungsa ("Shrine of the Five Loyal Subjects"), was built in 1788 to honor five men: Shin Geuk-jong, Shin Seok-hyeon, Shin Deok-hyeon, Shin Chi-geun, and Shin Gwang-se.

These five loyal subjects were local clerks of Geochang County. When Yi In-jwa raised a rebellion and marched north toward Seoul in 1728, and Jeong Hui-ryang joined the uprising in Anui County, the five rose up in righteous defense and distinguished themselves in repelling the rebel forces. After the rebellion was quelled, they were posthumously granted the rank of assistant section chief in the Ministry of Works and received a royal charter, along with permission to build this shrine.

In 1917, the gate tower from Geochang's old official guesthouse was relocated here to serve as Changchungsa's own gate tower. The shrine still carries, in its very structure, the story of five local clerks who rose to defend the nation in a moment of crisis.
