Galgyesup Forest

Galgyesup Forest

📍 Geochang

A lush forest on a natural islet formed where a stream flowing down from Deogyusan Mountain splits in two — this is Galgyesup Forest.

During the reign of King Myeongjong in the Joseon era, three brothers of the Im family and fellow scholars gathered here to compose poetry, and pavilions built in their honor — Gaseonjeong, Dogyejeong, Byeongamjeong — along with a memorial stele still stand in the forest today. It's also known as 'Gaseonrim' after one pavilion's name, or 'Chine Forest' after the village.

Stands of pine, alder, zelkova, and elm aged 200-300 years keep the forest shaded through every season, and in spring double cherry blossoms brighten the whole grove.

A well-groomed path loops through the forest, making it more of an easy stroll than a hike — comfortable for visitors of any age.

Honestly, though, it isn't especially large, so the walk itself takes just 30 minutes to an hour, and amenities are sparse, so it's worth pairing with nearby Suseungdae and Donggye Jongtaek House.

It's open at all times, free, and parking is available.
