East & West Three-Story Pagodas of Namsan-dong

East & West Three-Story Pagodas of Namsan-dong

📍 Gyeongju

The East and West Three-Story Pagodas of Namsan-dong, Gyeongju, like Bulguksa's Seokgatap and Dabotap, are an unusual example of two pagodas built side by side in different styles.

The east pagoda follows the brick-style pagoda form, built from stone shaped to resemble bricks. Its base consists of a wide, double-layered floor stone, topped with eight well-finished stones fitted together to form a single tier as the platform. The west pagoda, by contrast, follows the classic three-story pagoda style. The fact that two pagodas standing side by side in the same spot take such different forms offers a clear glimpse of the diversity within Silla stone pagoda styles.
