Cheomseongdae Observatory

Cheomseongdae Observatory

📍 Gyeongju

A place where Silla people stacked stone to read the stars 1,300 years ago — Cheomseongdae, the oldest surviving astronomical observatory in the East.

Traditionally dated to the reign of Queen Seondeok in the 7th century, it is a bottle-shaped stone structure about 9.17m tall. Its roughly 362 stones, laid in a gentle curve, are close to the number of days in a lunar year, and a long-loved reading divides the courses around the central window to match the 24 solar terms.

It has no ornate decoration, yet the gentle curve that has stood for 1,300 years is itself a symbol of Silla science and aesthetic sense at once.

For Koreans, Cheomseongdae is a name from the first pages of the textbook and an icon of the city of Gyeongju.

Honestly, though, the structure isn’t large, so up close many visitors say it’s “smaller than expected,” and you can’t enter or climb it.

Surrounded by wide lawns, its real charm is the sunset silhouette and nighttime lighting, especially during spring canola and autumn pink-muhly seasons. Daereungwon and Donggung & Wolji are within walking distance, so they’re easy to see together.

The exterior can be viewed 24 hours, and admission is free.

ℹ️ Travel infoExterior viewable 24 hours, year-round. Free admission. Parking nearby (public lots). Walking distance to Daereungwon and Donggung & Wolji. Tel (Gyeongju Station info) 054-772-3843.
📸 Best photo spotSet on open lawns, it’s perfect for a silhouette against the sunset. In spring, canola flowers frame it; in autumn, pink muhly grass.
