Donggung Palace & Wolji Pond

When night falls, an entire Silla palace rises again mirrored on the dark pond — this is Donggung Palace & Wolji Pond.

A detached palace where a Unified Silla prince resided and a man-made pond for banquets on national occasions and for honored guests, it has had some of its pavilions restored based on old records and excavation. For a long time it was called Anapji, “the pond where geese and ducks play,” and many still know it by that name.

The pond was shaped in curves so that it can never be taken in all at once from any single point, so a new view unfolds with every few steps.

For Koreans, this is the first place that comes to mind for a Gyeongju night view, and a space to feel the elegance of Silla court culture.

Honestly, though, since the night view is the whole point, it can feel flat by day, and at night the best reflection spots get crowded with photographers.

The moment just after sunset, when the lights first come on, brings the water and sky into their finest balance, so aim for then and pair it with Cheomseongdae and Daereungwon for an evening stroll.

Hours are 09:00-22:00 (last entry 21:30), open year-round; admission is charged (about KRW 3,000 for adults — please confirm before visiting).
