Bulguksa Temple

Bulguksa Temple

📍 Gyeongju

A Buddhist paradise that Silla-era Koreans built from stone and timber a thousand years ago — this is Bulguksa Temple in Gyeongju.

Founded in the 8th century at the height of Unified Silla, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 along with Seokguram Grotto. Most of the wooden buildings burned during the 1592 Japanese invasion, but the stone terraces, stairways, and pagodas survive exactly as Silla craftsmen left them.

Facing each other in the main courtyard, the Dabotap and Seokgatap pagodas are regarded as the two summits of Korean stone-pagoda art, while the Cheongun-gyo and Baegun-gyo stairways symbolize a bridge from the everyday world to the realm of the Buddha.

For Koreans, Bulguksa is a rite-of-passage school-trip destination and shorthand for a thousand years of Silla aesthetics.

Honestly, though, on peak spring and autumn weekends it gets crowded enough that getting a clear photo of the stairways is a challenge, and it's a fair walk from the parking lot to the temple gate.

For a quieter visit, come right after opening, and pair it with Seokguram for a half-day loop around Tohamsan Mountain.

Hours are 09:00-18:00 (last entry 17:00), open year-round, and admission is free. It's reachable by bus 10 or 11 from downtown Gyeongju.
