Seokguram Grotto

Seokguram Grotto

📍 Gyeongju

Inside a granite grotto halfway up Tohamsan Mountain, a Buddha has gazed toward the East Sea from the same spot for over a thousand years — this is Seokguram.

Built as an artificial grotto temple during Unified Silla in the 8th century, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 together with Bulguksa. It is not a natural cave: Silla builders stacked granite slabs one by one to form a domed ceiling with the main Buddha at its center — a masterpiece uniting the era’s architecture, mathematics, and faith.

The Buddha’s gentle smile, perfectly balanced proportions, and the finely carved bodhisattvas and disciples surrounding it are regarded as a summit of East Asian Buddhist sculpture.

For Koreans, Seokguram is learned as a pair with Bulguksa and stands for the pride of Silla science and art.

Honestly, though, to protect it from humidity the Buddha can only be viewed through a glass wall, so you can’t get close or photograph it, and it’s a 10-minute walk uphill from the parking lot.

It’s also a famous sunrise spot, so arriving at opening time lets you catch the sun rising over the East Sea; pair it with Bulguksa for a half-day loop.

Hours shift seasonally between roughly 09:00 and 17:00–18:00, open year-round, and admission is free.

ℹ️ Travel infoHours 09:00-18:00 (Mar-Sep), 09:00-17:30 (Feb/Oct), 09:00-17:00 (Nov-Jan), open year-round. Free admission. Parking available. Tel 054-746-9933.
📸 Best photo spotThe main Buddha sits behind glass indoors, so photography is limited. Instead, the East Sea view from the approach path near Tohamsan’s summit is the hidden photo spot.
