Founded in 771 by Prince Kaijo, elder brother of Emperor Kanmu, this temple now belongs to the Omuro branch of Shingon Buddhism. Its principal image, a Nyoirin Kannon Bodhisattva, is kept as a hidden statue. This image and its accompanying Four Heavenly Kings statues were designated National Important Cultural Properties in 1990. The approach path and grounds offer seasonal flowers year-round, becoming a noted spot for autumn foliage. A new main hall was completed in 2022, though the surrounding grounds and other facilities are still under development.
