Geochang Galgye-ri Three-Story Stone Pagoda

Geochang Galgye-ri Three-Story Stone Pagoda

📍 Geochang

Geochang Galgye-ri Three-Story Stone Pagoda has a double square base, carrying on the general style of Unified Silla-era stone pagodas.

What stands out, though, is its overall simplified construction — a clear sign of how pagoda styles began to change from the Goryeo period onward. Both the upper and lower base sections have corner pillars carved alongside a central support pillar, and the capstone connecting the body to the base was made from a single stone with a fairly gentle slope.

Beyond the corner-pillar carvings, the body has little additional ornamentation, and the roof-stone supports are formed in four tiers each. The eaves' drip-edge is set low, keeping the slope gentle, though the corners curve up noticeably.

It's not a pagoda that draws attention with elaborate carving, but for anyone curious to compare how stone pagoda styles gradually shifted over time while still carrying on Unified Silla tradition, it's a genuinely interesting stop.

ℹ️ Travel infoOpen at all times (outdoor). Free. Requires a car ride from downtown Geochang.
📸 Best photo spotA front angle showing the pagoda's full tiered structure works well. Framing it with the surrounding forest brings out the sense of it having stood here for centuries.
