Geochang Bangugeon House

Geochang Bangugeon House

📍 Geochang

Geochang Bangugeon was the home of Jeong Gi-pil, an official who served as magistrate of Yeongyang under Kings Heonjong and Cheoljong of Joseon.

Jeong was renowned during his time in office for his upright, incorruptible character. Yet when he resigned and returned to his hometown, he had neither property nor a place to live — and it's said that the magistrate of Anui at the time helped him build Bangugeon.

The name "Bangugeon" carries the meaning of looking inward and reflecting on oneself. Only the gate quarters and the men's quarters remain today, and based on a roof-ridge inscription surviving in the men's quarters, the house is believed to have been rebuilt in 1870.

The modest pair of buildings that remain still carry the story of an incorruptible official who, despite holding high office, had no house of his own to return to.
