Yangsan Tower, completed in January 2008, has an unusual origin story: it repurposed the smokestack of a resource-recovery (waste-to-energy) facility in the Seoksan-ri new town district of Dong-myeon into an observation tower.
Inside, the tower holds a book cafe, an exhibition hall, and an observatory. The exhibition hall lets visitors explore Yangsan's past, present, and future through photographs and interactive systems, while a sensory experience zone offers a 3D theater and game-based content for a playful "trip through Yangsan."
The book cafe, where visitors can read while overlooking downtown Yangsan, has become a beloved relaxation spot for travelers. From the observatory, the cityscape opens up to the south — and the night view after sunset is considered one of Yangsan's signature sights.
Reimagining a purely functional structure — a smokestack — as a city landmark gives this tower a different kind of charm than most observation towers.
