Bukjeong-ri Ancient Tombs (Yangsan)

📍 Yangsan

Bukjeong-ri Ancient Tombs, designated Historic Site No. 93 in 1963, is a cluster of Silla-era stone chamber tombs. Eighteen tombs, each with a stone burial chamber opening at the front, are densely packed along the ridge and slope of the site.

Artifacts recovered here hold up remarkably well against those from Gyeongju's grandest royal tombs — Cheonmachong, Geumgwanchong, and Hwangnamdaechong. That has led scholars to believe the people buried here were closely connected to Silla's central government, or perhaps its royal family.

The area originally fell under the influence of the Geumgwan Gaya confederacy centered in Gimhae, but as Gaya declined and the region was absorbed into Silla territory, Silla-style artifacts began appearing here — meaning the site preserves a physical record of the transition from Gaya to Silla rule.
