Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak)

Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak)

📍 Jeju

A vast volcano that rose from the sea like a crown — this is Seongsan Ilchulbong on Jeju.

About 5,000 years ago, a volcano erupted in shallow water, and where hot magma met seawater it built up a tuff cone (a hill formed from hardened volcanic ash). For its geological value it was inscribed in 2007 as part of the Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes UNESCO World Natural Heritage.

Ninety-nine sharp rocky peaks ring the crater like a giant fortress or crown, creating a striking silhouette from every angle. Climb to the top and a broad, bowl-shaped crater opens out before you.

For Koreans, Seongsan Ilchulbong is the first image that comes to mind at the word "Jeju," and a beloved spot for greeting the New Year's sunrise.

Honestly, though, the stairs to the top are steep, so brace for a 20-30 minute uphill climb, and at peak sunrise times the summit fills with people.

The real draw, as the name says, is the sunrise, so climb while it's still dark before dawn to greet the first light from the ridge — and don't miss the haenyeo (women divers) working the sea below.

Hours run from early morning to evening depending on the season; closed the first Monday of each month, and there is an admission fee (please confirm before visiting).

ℹ️ Travel infoHours vary by season (roughly 05:00-06:00 opening to 18:00-20:00), closed the first Monday of each month. Admission about KRW 5,000 for adults (confirm before visiting). Parking available. Sunrise spot. Tel 064-783-0959.
📸 Best photo spotHalfway up to the crater rim, the viewpoint framing Seongsan village with the sea is popular. As the name (Sunrise Peak) suggests, dawn is the highlight — aim for an early climb.
