Hyeopjae Beach

A beach regarded as having some of the loveliest water on Jeju — Hyeopjae Beach in Hallim-eup.

It's known for bright sand mixed with finely crushed white seashells and shallow, clear emerald water through which the seabed shows. The water glows so brightly because this shell-sand reflects the sunlight, producing an exotic color that recalls a tropical resort.

Biyangdo Island, floating just across the water as if within reach, becomes a natural backdrop, so a picture-perfect shot comes out in any season.

For Koreans, Hyeopjae is the signature beach of western Jeju and the place that shaped the image of "this is how blue the Jeju sea is."

Honestly, though, in peak summer the sand and parking get quite crowded, and on windy days waves and seaweed wash in and can cloud the water.

The shallow, gentle water is especially good for families with children, and sunset, when the light colors the sea, is the most beautiful time — aim for then. It's easy to pair with Hallim Park right next door for a half-day.

The beach is open at all times and admission is free (during the summer season, facilities like showers may charge).
