Dongmun Traditional Market

Dongmun Traditional Market

📍 Jeju

The kitchen of Jeju locals, and a food paradise for travelers — this is Dongmun Traditional Market in Jeju City.

It began right after Korea's liberation in August 1945, when it was the island's only permanent market and the base of all commercial activity on Jeju. A major fire in March 1954 burned the whole market to ashes, and that November it reopened at its present site. Today, together with the adjoining Dongmun Fish Market, it forms Jeju's largest permanent traditional market.

It sells everything from vegetables, fruit, and seafood to clothing and sundries — but for travelers the real draw is what only Jeju produces: hallabong and tangerines, silver hairtail and tilefish, and omegi rice cakes and black-pork skewers steamed and grilled right in the aisles.

For Jeju people this is a place to do the shopping before it is ever a tourist site, so unlike streets that only visitors walk, it keeps the living temperature of the local everyday.

Honestly, though, the aisles are narrow and crowded in the evening, making it hard to navigate with a suitcase, and prices differ slightly from stall to stall — for fruit and seafood, it's safer to ask at two or three before buying.

Going late afternoon and handling both dinner and a late snack is the best plan, and for omegi-tteok, pick a shop that offers frozen or ice-box packaging so it travels home well.

Hours are 08:00-21:00, open year-round, with no admission fee. It's about 15 minutes by car from Jeju Airport.
