Daepo Jusangjeolli Cliff

Daepo Jusangjeolli Cliff

📍 Jeju

A giant folding screen of stone pillars carved and set by nature — this is the Daepo Jusangjeolli Cliff in Jungmun, Seogwipo.

Hundreds of thousands of years ago, hot lava flowing from a volcano met the cold sea and cooled so rapidly that it shrank and cracked — this is columnar jointing. The result is tens of thousands of hexagonal and pentagonal stone columns, as straight as if measured with a ruler, forming a folding-screen cliff along the coast. The columns rise over 20m at their tallest and run along 1-2km of shoreline.

The moment dark-blue waves shatter white against these pillared cliffs is one of Jeju's signature scenes, where nature's regularity and the sea's dynamism meet in a single frame.

For Koreans, this is the site that most dramatically shows Jeju's volcanic geology, and a must-do on any Jungmun trip.

Honestly, though, you can't go down to the base of the cliff — you look down from an observation deck — and on days with little wind and calm seas, the drama of the spray is muted.

The higher the surf, the more dramatic the columns of spray, so check the weather before going, and pair it with nearby spots like Jungmun Saekdal Beach and Cheonjeyeon Falls.

Hours are 09:00-17:30, open year-round, and there is an admission fee (please confirm before visiting).
