Manjanggul Lava Tube

Manjanggul Lava Tube

📍 Jeju

A giant underground tunnel that hot lava, flowing from a volcano hundreds of thousands of years ago, bored out for itself — this is Manjanggul on Jeju.

It's a lava tube, formed as the surface of a lava flow hardened while the molten interior kept flowing out, leaving a hollow passage some 7.4km long — one of the largest in the world. It was inscribed in 2007 as part of the Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes UNESCO World Natural Heritage.

Walking the roughly 1km open section, you'll meet the ripple marks of flowing lava, lava shelves along the walls, lava stalactites hardened from the ceiling, and, guarding the tube's end, a giant lava column 7.6m tall — among the largest in the world.

For Koreans, Manjanggul is a landmark geological site where you feel Jeju's volcanic-island identity with your own body.

Honestly, though, the floor is uneven, dark, and wet, so it's easy to slip, and you have to walk 1km in and back out, which tires the legs.

Even in midsummer the interior stays around 10°C, so bring a layer and non-slip shoes, and pair it with eastern-Jeju spots like Seongsan Ilchulbong and Bijarim Forest.

Hours are 09:00-18:00 (last entry 17:10), closed the first Wednesday of each month, and there is an admission fee (please confirm before visiting).

ℹ️ Travel infoHours 09:00-18:00 (last entry 17:10), closed the first Wednesday of each month. Admission about KRW 4,000 for adults (confirm before visiting). Parking available. Cool inside (bring a layer). Tel 064-710-7903.
📸 Best photo spotThe giant lava column at the tube's end (about 7.6m tall) is the signature photo spot. It's dark and damp inside, so a bright lens that handles low light helps even without a tripod.
