Gyeongju Seokbinggo Ice Storage

A seokbinggo is a stone building used to store ice, and this one sits atop the northern rampart inside Gyeongju's Banwolseong fortress, stretching north to south.

Entering through the doorway on the south side, visitors descend a staircase into the interior. The floor slopes progressively deeper toward the interior, designed to let water drain away as ice melted. The roof is semicircular, with three ventilation shafts connecting to outside air. Within this seemingly simple structure lies the refined scientific ingenuity of people who, without any refrigeration technology, managed to preserve ice all the way through summer.
