Tomb of Kim Yu-sin

Tomb of Kim Yu-sin

📍 Gyeongju

The tomb of General Kim Yu-sin, the renowned commander who led Silla to unify the Three Kingdoms.

Kim Yu-sin was a Silla general and statesman whose contributions were decisive in the unification of the Three Kingdoms. When he died in 674 (the 14th year of King Munmu's reign), the king honored him with the highest rites — bestowing 1,000 bolts of silk and 2,000 sacks of rice, sending a 100-member military band for the funeral, erecting a memorial stone, and even assigning commoners to tend the grave. Later, under King Heungdeok, he was posthumously honored with the title "King Heungmu."

Fitting his status, the tomb's scale and form are essentially that of a royal tomb. The large circular mound, about 30 meters across, is ringed by 24 stone guardian slabs and a stone balustrade, carved with the twelve zodiac guardian figures representing the cardinal directions. Unlike most royal tombs, where these guardians are shown in armor, here they wear plain clothing and carry only weapons, giving them an unusually gentle expression — notably, they face forward but turn their heads slightly to the right, a distinctive touch worth a closer look.

The walk in along a dense pine-forest path sets a calm, contemplative mood, offering a different kind of stroll from Gyeongju's more famous royal tomb clusters downtown.

Open year-round; hours are 09:00-18:00 in summer (Mar-Oct) and 09:00-17:00 in winter (Nov-Feb), with parking available.
