Yakunogenbugankoen Park

At Yakuno Basalt Park, columnar jointing in basalt formed as lava cooled and set stands exposed, so you can look directly at a piece of natural sculpture. These striking columns were created between 300,000 and 400,000 years ago, when lava that flowed from the eruption of Mount Hosan — said to be the only volcano in Kyoto Prefecture — cooled and cracked into hexagons as it hardened.
