Tenryuji Temple
📍 KyotoTenryuji was founded in 1339 by shogun Ashikaga Takauji to console the spirit of Emperor Go-Daigo, who had died in exile at Yoshino. Its stroll garden, laid out by the founding priest Muso Kokushi, borrows the slopes of Arashiyama, Kameyama and Ogurayama as living scenery and survives almost exactly as he designed it 680 years ago — aristocratic taste and Zen restraint folded into one landscape that changes with every season. UNESCO added it to the World Heritage list in 1994. Look up in the Hatto hall: Kayama Matazo painted its cloud dragon on the ceiling in 1997.
