Nanzenji Temple
📍 KyotoNanzenji began in 1291, when Emperor Kameyama turned his own detached palace into a Zen temple; it later ranked 'above the Five Mountains,' the highest status a Zen temple could hold. The enormous Sanmon gate hits you first, two stories with side corridors. Inside the National Treasure abbot's quarters, a tiger painting attributed to Kano Tanyu gives the Tiger Room its name, and the dry landscape garden out front is called the 'Tiger Cubs Crossing' for stones arranged like a tigress leading her young across a river. Don't miss the retro brick aqueduct arching through the grounds.
