Tsukiyomijinja Shrine

Tsukiyomijinja Shrine

📍 Kyoto

Tsukiyomi Shrine is among the oldest shrines in the former Tsuzuki district. Its founding date is unclear, but it appears in the Engishiki, the early Heian register of shrines across Japan, and was venerated by the court of the day. Its deity is Tsukuyomi, younger brother of Amaterasu. A monthly rite is held on the first of each month and the harvest thanksgiving in late November, while the annual festival on 14 October features an offering of the hayato dance.
