Sugajinja Shrine

An old shrine record notes that because the district's head shrine to Gozu Tenno — today's Shuchi Shrine — was far away, a Tenno shrine was also built in Uchida village; that is the origin of Suga Shrine, renamed in the Meiji period. The main hall, a registered cultural property of Kyoto Prefecture, is an east-facing single-bay nagare-zukuri structure, and an inscription on the railing finials dates its construction to 1776. Elaborate carving runs through it — a tapir on the front nose-piece, chrysanthemums on the beam covers — making it a representative piece of mid-18th-century shrine and temple architecture.
