Sennyuji was originally called Senyuji, but when its halls were built in 1218 the name was changed to reflect the spring welling up in the grounds. Not long after, the mausoleum of Emperor Shijo was established here, and from then on the temple has held its standing as the Mitera — the imperial family's temple. In the Kannon hall stands the Yang Guifei Kannon, said to have been modelled on the Tang dynasty consort, and its colouring is still vivid. In April 2004 the temple opened a new treasure house, the Shinshoden. People come here to pray for good marriage ties and for beauty.
