Rikyuhachimangu

Rikyuhachimangu

📍 Kyoto

Rikyu Hachimangu was founded in 860, when the monk Gyokyo of Daianji in Nara invited the Usa Hachiman deity here. The name records that this was the site of Emperor Saga's detached palace. In the medieval period it became the seat of the aburaza, the largest of all the trade guilds, and enormous wealth and power concentrated here — the Shigisan Engi scroll refers to the Yamazaki rich man, which gives some sense of how the place was regarded.

📸 Best photo spotShoot straight through the torii gate to capture the shrine's signature red color and sense of depth.
