Oyamazumijinja Shrine

📍 Kyoto

Oyamazumi Shrine stands a short climb up a narrow path off the road between the rice fields, enclosed by trees. It began when Suminobu's brother — Sumisaku, brother of Fujiwara no Sumitomo — enshrined the three Kumano deities here, and in 1374 Kusunoki Masasue, younger brother of Masashige, is said to have fixed the present site. The main hall dates from 1419 and is a single-bay nagare-zukuri structure. Its roof is shingled with thin cypress boards laid side by side, and the building is an Important Cultural Property.

📸 Best photo spotShoot straight through the torii gate to capture the shrine's signature red color and sense of depth.
