Otokunidera Temple

Otokunidera Temple

📍 Kyoto

Once the oldest and largest temple in the Otokuni district, Otokunidera is said to have been founded by Prince Shotoku. It is best known as the place where Prince Sawara was confined. Kukai served as its administrator for a time, and it was here that he and Saicho debated the esoteric teachings. Over 2,000 peony plants grow in the grounds and open their large blooms in late April.

📸 Best photo spotVisit early morning or late afternoon when it's less crowded, for a clearer shot of the gate and grounds.
