Otanidaigakuhakubutsukan Museum

The Otani University Museum grew out of the university's own long history. Otani University began in Kyoto in 1665 as a seminary of Higashi Honganji, moved to Sugamo in Tokyo in 1901 to reopen as a modern university, and settled at its present site in 1913. In 2001, marking a century of that modern era and 336 years since its founding, the university built the Koruokan Shin Buddhist research centre and included in it a museum to display the material it had been collecting all along. It opened in October 2003, showing Shin Buddhist and wider Buddhist cultural properties.
