Omiyamejinja Shrine

Omiyamejinja Shrine

📍 Kyoto

Omiyame Shrine has long been deeply venerated as the second shrine of Tango province. It enshrines Omiyame and Wakamiyame, and appears by name in the Engishiki of the early Heian period. Of the two stone lanterns before the main hall, the right-hand one carries an inscription dated to 1307, which makes it a valuable piece of Kamakura-period stonework and an Important Cultural Property. The entire grounds are also a ritual site, and the way a place of worship developed into a shrine on the very same spot has drawn considerable scholarly attention.
