Obarajinja Shrine

Obara Shrine is a designated cultural property of Kyoto Prefecture. It is said to have been established in 852 at Kashihara in what is now Miyama, and moved to Obara in 1279. It enshrines Izanami, Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi. Within the solemn grounds stand the main hall along with subsidiary shrines to the gods of fire and water, and a substantial thatched votive-plaque hall built with its own stage. The shrine has long been prayed to for safe childbirth and good harvests, and more recently for road safety, and draws a steady stream of worshippers. Nearby stands a birthing hut designated an intangible folk cultural property of the prefecture.
